Another super box office weekend

As expected, the Will Smith superhero movie “Hancock” pummeled the weekend box office, taking in an additional $66 milion, and bringing its total to $107 million in less than a week.

That makes it the third superhero movie to open at No. 1 this summer, following big opening weekends for “Iron Man” ($98 million) and “The Incredible Hulk” ($55 million). Another comic book-based movie, “Wanted,” has also done very well. (That film opened with $51 million and was a strong No. 2 the prior weekend.)

The big box-office numbers certainly bode well for this weekend’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” and for next week’s “The Dark Knight,” both of which are also based on comic book characters and concepts
