Seen and reviewed (Aug. 13 and 15)
New films this week:
– “American Teen” (rated PG-13), a documentary feature about Indiana high school students.
– “The Edge of Heaven” (not rated), a European drama about strained parental relationships.
– “Fly Me to the Moon” (rated G), an animated 3-D feature that re-creates the Apollo 11 space mission.
– “Henry Poole is Here” (rated PG), a comedy-drama about faith starring Luke Wilson.
– “Mirrors” (rated R), a horror-thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland as an ex-cop.
– “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (rated PG), an animated “prequel” to George Lucas’s science-fiction classics.
– “Tropic Thunder” (rated R), filmmaker-star Ben Stiller’s spoof of war films and Hollywood.
– “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (rated PG-13), Woody Allen’s comedy about American tourists in Spain.
“Mirrors” was not pre-screened for critics. And both the lame “Fly Me” and “Clone Wars” cartoons are so awful that it’s a wonder that they were.
As for “Tropic Thunder,” another of this August’s mid-week openings, it repeats the same five jokes over and over — to the point that it becomes annoying and tiresome.
The independent (or so-called “art-house”) releases are more interesting. Co-stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz steal “Vicky Cristina,” the performances redeem both “Henry Poole” and “Edge of Heaven,” and despite its slick, MTV-style direction, “American Teens” is pretty involving.
Which, if any, of these movies figure into your weekend plans?
