Seen and reviewed (Feb. 13)
New films in theaters this week:
– “Confessions of a Shopaholic” (rated PG), a fashion-centric comedy starring Isla Fisher.
– “Friday the 13th” (rated R), a remake of the first three slasher series films.
– “The International” (rated R), a suspense-thriller starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts.
– “The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2009″ (Animated Program) (not rated), a compilation of this year’s Academy Award eligible cartoons.
– “The Oscar Nominated Shorts Films 2009″ (Live-Action Program) (not rated), a compilation of this year’s Academy Award eligible, live-action shorts.
– “Under the Sea 3D” (rated G), a large-screen format sequel to 2006′s “Deep Sea 3D.”
Unfortunately, this week’s wide releases aren’t particularly impressive. Despite the charms of Fisher (“The Wedding Crashers”), “Shopaholic” is pretty flat … and is too long.
“The International” tries to be an intellectual — in the way it attacks world finance and political intrigue. But its second half is riddled with plot holes. And Watts in an unnecessary presence.
The “Friday the 13th” re-do may appeal to fans of the genre — especially since it’s unabashedly R-rated. But it won’t win over any new plans.
However, the supposed “art house” and smaller releases are worthwhile. The live-action shorts program is weaker than the animated one, though the goofy, Danish short “The Pig,” is amusing.
The animated shorts program boasts Disney/Pixar’s “Presto” (which was also seen before last summer’s “WALL-E”) and other winners.
Still, the week’s best release is “Under the Sea,” which is narrated by Jim Carrey, features breathtaking glimpses of underwater life-forms (cephalopods, sharks and such). And at 40 minutes, it definitely doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Which, if any, of these movies figure into your weekend viewing plans?
