When $12 million just isn't enough (movie box-office estimates)
The weekend’s top-five movies (estimated totals courtesy of Box Office Mojo):
1. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail
$16.5 million
2. Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience
$12.7 million
3. Slumdog Millionaire
$12.2 million
4. Taken
$10 million
5. He’s Just Not That Into You
$5.9 million
Obviously, the biggest surprise and disappointment was the Jonas Brothers concert movie, which analysts had expected to make between $25 million-$30 million over the weekend. Instead, it finished second to the latest Tyler Perry comedy, now in its second week.
What makes the music documentary’s semi-flopping especially disappointing is that theaters around the country reduced the number of screens showing the animated feature “Coraline” to accommodate the new movie. (Both films are being shown in the 3-D format, and there are a finite number of screens that are available for that format.)
In the meantime, the Academy Award-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” had another strong weekend. But another new film, “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” performed poorly, with an estimated three-day “take” of $4.7 million.
