Seen and reviewed (March 13)
New films in theaters this week:
– “The Last House on the Left” (rated R), a remake of the controversial, 1972 Wes Craven film.
– “Miss March” (rated R), a sex comedy from the cast of IFC’s “The Whitest Kids U Know.”
– “Race to Witch Mountain” (rated R), a remake of the earlier Disney sci-fi hits.
– “Two Lovers” (rated R), a romantic comedy-drama starring Joaquin Phoenix.
– “Wendy and Lucy” (rated R), a low-key drama starring Michelle Williams.
Neither “Last House” nor “Miss March” were pre-screened for local critics, though word of mouth has not been kind for either film.
And the slow pacing of “Wendy and Lucy” may turn off some audiences, though Williams’ performance is solid.
As for “Witch Mountain,” it does turn a little violent and nasty towards the end — especially for a PG-rated film. But former WWE wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is goofy enough to be amusing, and it’s pretty fun.
Also, “Two Lovers” allegedly features Phoenix’s final big-screen performance. That would be a shame, though, since he’s convincing and sympathetic as a depressed thirtysomething in the film.
Which, if any of these movies, fits into your weekend viewing plans?
