Seen and reviewed (March 27)
New films in theaters this week:
– “12 Rounds” (rated PG-13), a revenge-thriller starring WWE wrestler John Cena.
– “Gomorrah” (not rated), a thriller about the Neopolitan mafia. Italian with subtitles.
– “Harvard Beats Yale 29-29″ (not rated), a documentary about the 1968 football game between the Ivy League rivals.
– “The Haunting in Connecticut” (rated PG-13), a horror movie based on an alleged “true story.”
– “Monsters vs. Aliens” (rated PG), a science-fiction comedy starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and others.
– “Sunshine Cleaning” (rated R), a comedy-drama about sisters who start a crime scene clean-up business.
Neither “12 Rounds” nor “Haunting” were pre-screened for critics, at least locally. The word of mouth has not been kind for either movie, though.
And while “Harvard Beats Yale” re-tells an exciting gridiron contest, the filmmaking is pretty flat and by-the-numbers. You’d be better off watching a replay of the actual game.
Actresses Amy Adams and Emily Blunt — who play the squabbling siblings — make the messy “Sunshine Cleaning” better than it probably should be.
As for “Gomorrah,” those who are unfamiliar with the story of Italy’s Camorra crime group may be lost. But patient audiences will be rewarded.
The week’s best film is DreamWorks Animation’s newest, “Monsters vs. Aliens.” There are jokes and clever bits aimed at both kids and their parents, and this is one of those movies that’s best viewed in the immersive, 3D format.
Which, if any of these movies, fits into your weekend viewing plans?
