A "Monster"-ous opening

The weekend’s top-five movies (estimated totals courtesy of Box Office Mojo; final figures will be available Monday afternoon):

1. Monsters vs. Aliens
$58.2 million
2. The Haunting in Connecticut
$23 million
3. Knowing
$14.7 million
4. I Love You, Man
$12.6 million
5. Duplicity
$7.6 million

The huge opening for the much-hyped DreamWorks cartoon came as no surprise … it did, after all, open on more than 4,000 screens. And the premium prices for the film’s 3-D format showing certainly didn’t hurt.

However, the critically panned “Haunting in Connecticut” scared up a good first week’s take, and the similarly derided “Knowing” continued to do well at the box office.

Given the star power of “Duplicity” … the film stars Julia Roberts and Clive Owen … its $26 million “take” is disappointing.
