Seen and reviewed (April 3)
New films in theaters this week:
– “Adventureland” (rated R), an ’80s-period, coming-of-age comedy.
– “Crossing Over” (rated R), a dramatic thriller about illegal immigration. Harrison Ford stars.
– “Fast & Furious” (rated PG-13), a street-racing thriller reunited the stars of the original film.
– “Reflections in the Mud” (not rated), a locally produced feature that is part romantic drama, part thriller.
The fourth “Furious” movie was not widely pre-screened for critics, including local movie writers. Like the earlier films, the early word of mouth has not been kind.
As for “Crossing Over,” it recalls 2004′s overrated “Crash,” since it uses multiple story lines and is set in Los Angeles. If anything, it’s even more crushingly heavy-handed than earlier movie.
And while you can appreciate the fact that “Reflections” is more ambitious than most films, its storytelling is muddy. And it’s directed and edited in a style that can best be described as “attention deficit.”
The week’s best film, by far, is “Adventureland,” which comes from the makers of the hit “Superbad.” Like that movie, it’s raunchy and there are questionable bits. But it’s also sweetly appealing and clever, like the films of John Hughes.
Which, if any of these movies, fits into your weekend viewing plans?
