Clawing his way to the top (weekend movie box-office)

The weekend’s top-five movies (estimated totals courtesy of Box Office Mojo; final figures will be available Monday afternoon):

1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
$87 million
2. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
$15.3 million
3. Obsessed
$12.2 million
4. 17 Again
$6.4 million
5. Monsters vs. Aliens
$5.8 million

As expected, the Wolverine “prequel” film got the 2009 summer movie season off to a big start. The drop off after the initial, $35 million take on Friday was a little worrisome, though.

And “Ghosts” — which was intended to be “counterprogramming” for that movie — provided fairly weak competition.

The real surprise was the continued strength of the widely panned “Obsessed.” However, most of its competition wasn’t much better reviewed.
