The Award season is under way, and Billy Elliot is dancing his way to the top. The Drama Desk Awards were announced Sunday, and the musical about a ballet-dancing school boy led the pack with 10 wins, including best musical, outstanding music (Elton John), featured actor (Gregory Jbara) and featured actress (Haydn Gwynne). The musical also won best choreography (Peter Darling) plus a slew of technical awards.

Best play honors when to Pulitzer Prize-winner “Ruined.”

Local boy Will Swenson was nominated for his role of Berger in the revival of “Hair,” but it was Brian d’Arcy James who won for his portrayal of the green ogre in “Shrek: the Musical.”

The nods for best revivals went to “Hair” (musical) and “The Norman Conquests” (play).

Next come the Tony Awards, which will be announced Sunday, June 7, on CBS.
