A modest "Proposal" (weekend movie box-office totals)

The weekend’s top-five movies (estimated totals courtesy of Box Office Mojo; final figures will be available Tuesday afternoon):

1. The Proposal
$34.1 million
2. The Hangover
$26.9 million
3. Up
$21.3 million
4. Year One
$20.2 million
5. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
$11.3 million

The opening for Sandra Bullock’s latest might not seem huge, but considering the film debuted on the male-centric Father’s Day weekend, it’s doubtful the studio is complaining.

Meanwhile, both the R-rated “Hangover” and Disney-Pixar’s “Up” continued to do well. That latter film should pass “Star Trek” within the next week or so, and thus become the year’s No. 1 movie.

However, its reign will probably be a short one. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” opens June 24 and is expected to smash a few existing box-office records.
