Utahns: Harry Potter's No. 1 fans

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” has been out in U.S. theaters for less than a day, and is already breaking existing box-office records. Utahns played a large role in that.

The film, an adaptation of the sixth of author J.K. Rowling’s best-selling fantasy novels, took in $22 million in ticket sales in midnight and early-morning showings, bettering the $18.5 million midnight opening for “The Dark Knight” last summer.

And all five Megaplex Theatres locations were in the top 15 for midnight screening tickets sold. Megaplex’s Jordan Commons (Sandy) theater ranked No. 1, the District (South Jordan) was No. 2, the Gateway (Salt Lake City) was No. 4, the Junction (Ogden) was No. 7, and Thanksgiving Point (Lehi) was No. 15.

Local Harry Potter fans “took the movie premiere to a whole new level. Thousands of guests were able to enjoy our premiere party atmosphere,’ said Blake Andersen, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Megaplex Theatres.”

The Jordan Commons location also hosted a Hogsmeade Festival and other events Tuesday, in anticipation of the much-awaited film’s opening.
