Okay, I'm a nerd
The past few months, I’ve been making playlists for my iPod.
Initially I just put a whole bunch of songs in the “on-the-go” file and was done with it. But after a few listens to those lists, I decided to do some more “conceptual” lists, based on my other interests.
For example, Batman is my favorite superhero, but my favorite comic books are actually Neil Gaiman “Sandman” works. They feature a family called “The Endless” — which comprise the brothers and sisters characters Morpheus (also known as Dream), Death, Delirium, Despair, Desire, Destiny and Destruction.

So I decided to create some “Sandman”-themed iPod playlists. I created lists for Morpheus, Death, Delirium, Desire, Despair and Destiny.
I opted not to create a file for Destruction, though. In the DC/Vertigo comic series, he opted to abandon his family and calling.
Yes. You may call me a nerd, but seriously, I had a great time choosing the songs for the respective lists, all of which average about 136 songs apiece.
Here is a five-song highlight example for each list:
– Morpheus (aka Dream):
“Street of Dreams,” Rainbow and Blackmore’s Night
“Cristofori’s Dream,” David Lanz
“End of the Night,” the Doors
“Dream Brother,” Jeff Buckley
“Enter Sandman,” Metallica
– Death:
“Done Too Soon,” Neil Diamond
“Into the West,” Annie Lennox
“My Immortal,” Evanescence
“Cemetery Gates,” Pantera
“The March,” the Widow’s Bane
– Delirium:
“Psychobabble,” Alan Parsons Project
“She’s Only Happy in the Sun,” Ben Harper
“Bouncing Off Clouds,” Tori Amos
“Singing Crocodile,” Will Ackerman
“Gates of Delirium,” Yes
– Desire:
“Love Song for a Vampire,” Annie Lennox
“Sin City,” AC/DC
“Just Can’t Get Enough,” Depeche Mode
“Fire,” Jimi Hendrix
“Brass in Pocket,” The Pretenders
– Despair:
“The Devil Cried,” Black Sabbath
“What I’ve Done,” Linkin Park
“Hurt,” Nine Inch Nails
“Elephants,” Rachael Yamagata
“Sayonara,” Off Course
– Destiny:
“Livin’ on the Edge,” Aerosmith
“Born to Be My Baby,” Bon Jovi
“Part of the Plan,” Dan Fogelberg
“Come Sail Away,” Styx
“The Seventh Seal,” Van Halen
So there you have a sample of some of the songs in those lists.
I think the next playlist themes I’ll do are the various vampires in Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” series — Armand, Lestat, Louis, Claudia, Marius, Akasha, Merrick, Pandora. Oh, the possibilities are endless!
