New films in theaters this week:
– “Edge of Darkness” (rated R), a revenge-thriller that stars Mel Gibson as a Boston police detective.
– “When in Rome” (rated PG-13), a romantic fantasy starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.

Neither of these films really qualifies as “best of the week” candidates. However, the grim-and-gritty “Edge of Darkness” — as ludicrous as it gets — is at least more watchable than “When in Rome.” That long-delayed comedy is an embarrassment to everyone involved in its production.
Which, if either, of these movies fit into your weekend viewing plans?
