Seen and reviewed (March 12)
New films in theaters this week:
– Fish Tank” (not rated), a downbeat British drama starring newcomer Katie Jarvis.
– “Green Zone” (rated R), an Iraq war thriller re-uniting “The Bourne Ultimatum” star Matthew Damon and filmmaker Paul Greengrass.
– “North Face” (not rated), a mountain climbing thriller based on real-life events. German with subtites.
– “Our Family Wedding” (rated PG-13), a multi-cultural comedy starring Carlos Mencia and Forest Whitaker.
– “Remember Me” (rated PG-13), a star-crossed lovers tale starring Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin.
– “She’s Out of My League” (rated R), a sweet-yet-salt romantic comedy starring Jay Baruchel.
– “Until the Light Takes Us” (not rated), a documentary feature about “black metal” music. Norwegian with subtitles.
This week’s movies are pretty disappointing. “Until the Light Takes Us” is one of the most shoddily constructed documentaries in recent history, while the overlong, potty-mouthed “Fish Tank” is too familiar and predictable — despite Jarvis’s star-making performance.

And it’s only the action sequences that make both the inconsistent “North Face” and “Green Zone” watchable. Fans of the “Bourne” movies may be disappointed in the latter. While it may be based on a non-fiction novel, it still feels contrived and convoluted.
Still, both of them are better than the surprisingly racially insensitive “Family Wedding,” which squanders a good cast (Whitaker and America Ferrara). And its cruder moments rival those in the R-rated “She’s Out of My League,” which was comes off as Judd Apatow lite. That latter film does have a few laughs, and the cast is good, though.

The week’s worst movie, by far, is “Remember Me,” a mostly dull drama lacking needed energy and vitality. As bad as it is, the film becomes completely offensive in its manipulative finale — a bit that tries to wring tears from the audience by exploiting America’s recent, tragic past.
Which, if any, of these movies fit into your weekend viewing plans?
