Peter Steele, the vampiric vocalist for the doom band Type O Negative is dead of heart failure at 48.
I’ve always liked Steele, who was born Petrus Ratajczyk in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was, to me, one of the coolest musicians I have ever met.
I interviewed him in March, 1995, and met him at Saltair where TON was playing Saltair with Pantera.
He was mellow and laid back. After talking a bit about the tour, he signed my “Bloody Kisses” CD. And bowed as he left.
I met him again a few months later, and he gave me a warm handshake and asked how the newspaper was doing.
What I liked about him was the fact that he was very low key.
“I consider myself very boring,” he said the last time I talked with him. “I don’t like to talk about myself. So tell me more about how you’re doing.”
In 2005, rumors spread that Steele had died. But those rumors turned out to be just rumors.
This time, however, it’s true.
Here’s to you Peter. Peace.
