Seen and reviewed (May 21)

New films in theaters this week:

– “35 Shots of Rum” (not rated), a drama about a loving father-daughter relationship. French with subtitles.
– “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” (not rated), a Korean-made spoof of Spaghetti Westerns. Korean with subtitles.
– “Just Wright” (rated PG), a romantic comedy-drama starring Queen Latifah as a physical therapist.
– “Letters to Juliet” (rated PG), a romantic comedy-drama, set in Italy and starring Amanda Seyfried.
– “Robin Hood” (rated PG-13), director Ridley Scott’s revisionist re-telling of the English legends, starring Russell Crowe.

The so-called “art-house” releases are considerably better than their major studio counterparts this week. “35 Shots” is a little slow and talky, but the characters seem real, thanks to some solid performances. And the violent “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” is a lot of fun. It will appeal to fans of Asian filmmaker Stephen Chow, whose often-goofy works this film resembles.

Meanwhile, “Just Wright” and “Letters to Juliet” are both missed opportunities. Queen Latifah is charming in the former, as usual, but this silliness offers nothing substantive for her to do. And Seyfried’s romantic foibles are the least interesting thing in “Juliet,” which is more interesting for its scenery than anything else.

The week’s biggest film — “Robin Hood” — may be the most disappointing of the bunch. It’s a grim and grimy, would-be epic that is actually a “prequel” to most of the versions of the story we’ve seen. And Crowe seems disinterested and unengaged in most of the movie.

Which, if any, of these movies fit into your weekend viewing plans?
